Letters to the editor: Readers react to Newtown shootings

I watched in horror at the news reports of the carnage at a Connecticut elementary school: 20 children and six adults killed. When will our politicians stand up to the loud-mouth bullies of the National Rifle Association and its members? These are the same gutless politicians who take money from the NRA to fund their elections to curb any attempt at regulations of guns. These are the same gutless politicians who eviscerated the Brady Bill. These are the same gutless politicians who fail to close any loopholes in gun legislation, such as restrictions of semiautomatic pistols and the size of ammunition clips or bans on assault weapons, or background checks at gun shows, because they are afraid of the NRA and its members. Why is the NRA so afraid of such common-sense legislation? The NRA will tell you people have a right to have any type of gun and ammunition they want, that deranged, thoughtless people kill, not guns. I was once told by a gun owner I just didn't understand the pleasure shooting a gun gave owners. Obviously not. Guns are designed for one thing - to kill. There will come a point when we as a people and a nation will join the 21st century and stop the carnage that guns cause. Let's see the reaction of the NRA and our politicians over this latest gun tragedy. I fear little will change. Common-sense gun laws are needed in this country. When will our politicians have the courage to enact them? Gary C. Huested Palm Bay
